Man slips through security to speak piece about 9/11 at Super Bowl

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Feb. 3 (UPI) -- A New York man was arrested after slipping past security at Super Bowl XVIII and interrupting MVP Malcolm Smith's post-game news conference.

Matthew Mills, 30, told NJ.com he wanted to get close to MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., so he could conduct some fan interviews Sunday.

Mills wore a credential from a festival he covered that, when looked at quickly, didn't look too far off from ones issued to media, team employees and others who worked the Super Bowl.

He also had a standard line when approached security personnel verifying credentials or tickets with a bar code.

"I just said I was running late for work and I had to get in there," Mills said. "It was that simple."

He told NJ.com he didn't think he'd get into the stadium. After the game ended, Mills walked into the tent where players and coaches were brought for interviews.

"I just saw my opportunity to get my word out there and I took it," Mills said.

Mills took the microphone as Smith began to talk to reporters and said the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington were "perpetrated by people in our own government."

Mills, a self-described "truther" concerning the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, was hustled off the dais, arrested on a with trespassing charge and later released on his own recognizance.

NJ.com said Mills is affiliated with WeAreChange, an organization that seeks to "confronting prominent and powerful people with the tough questions the mainstream media doesn't want to ask."
