CRAFTSBURY, Vt., Feb. 2 (UPI) -- A 20-year-old Dartmouth College skier collapsed and died Saturday while competing in a 25-kilometer race in Vermont, school officials said.

Skier Dies During Race

Dartmouth President Phil Hanlon said junior Torin Tucker collapsed during the 25K Classic Marathon at Craftsbury Nordic Center in Craftsbury, the Valley News in Lebanon, N.H., reported.

"We have been in contact with his family and share our deepest sympathies with them at this time of heartbreaking loss," Hanlon wrote in an email to the college community.

Russell Spring, general manager at Craftsbury Outdoor Center, said he talked to one of the first people to find Tucker, who grew up in Sun Valley, Idaho.

"He said he came up over a hill and saw [Tucker] lying there and helped give him CPR," Spring told the newspaper.

But Spring said he was told the rescue workers "were unable to save him."

"It's really sad," Spring said. "At the end of the day, people were coming in and talking about how great the conditions were, but most of them didn't know what had happened. I have a son who's 20, so this hits home for me."
