FRANKFURT, Germany, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- Daniel Brands won first in his first Davis Cup appearance of the year Sunday, giving Germany a 4-1 series win over Spain.

The Germans won a pair of singles matches Friday and then Saturday's doubles to lock up the series. The lone Spanish point of the weekend came when Feliciano Lopez was granted a walkover over Philipp Kohlschreiber in Sunday's first scheduled match.

Kohlschreiber defeated Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 and Florian Mayer edged Lopez 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 5-7, 6-3 in Friday's singles. Kohlschreiber and Tommy Haas clinched the series with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (9-11), 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 doubles win Saturday.

That earned Germany a spot in the April 4-6 Davis Cup quarterfinals against France, which beat Australia in its first-round series.

Brands, who had played in one Davis Cup match previously, had 12 aces and the only break of the 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win Sunday over Bautista Agut Sunday. Bautista Agut managed two break chances but failed to convert either.
