ST. MORITZ, Switzerland, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- The final weekend of World Cup skiing before the Olympics was in jeopardy after bad weather scrubbed Saturday's races in Switzerland and Slovenia.
The men's downhill in St. Moritz was canceled due to fog and the ladies' giant slalom in Kranjska, Slovenia was called off amid a swirl of snow, rain and fog on the course.
"The bad visibility in conjunction with the soft snow outside the race line won't enable the athletes to have a safe race," said a statement issued by race officials and coaches in Kranjska.
The International Skiing Federation said the plan was to hope for the best for Sunday's women's slalom and men's giant slalom. The forecast in St. Moritz called for snow overnight, which will require the course to be groomed in the wee hours.
