The goals by Kunitz and Jokinen came just past the midway point of the first period and gave Pittsburgh a 3-1 lead. Rookie Jeff Zatkoff made that advantage stand up by stopping 30 shots and improving his record to 9-2-1.
Pittsburgh won for the fourth time in five games and increased the largest point total in the Eastern Conference to 78. The Pittsburgh lead over the second-place New York Rangers in the Metropolitan Division grew to 17 points.
Knuitz and Jokinen took advantage of those penalties to break open a 1-1 tie. The only goal after that came from Tanner Glass in the second period.
Pittsburgh's first three goals came on seven shots against Jonathan Quick, driving him from the net. Martin Jones then gave up a goal on 15 shots.
