FRANKFURT, Germany, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- David Marrero and Fernando Verdasco were teamed together for the key doubles match for Spain in its Davis Cup first-round series in Germany.

Spain has won the last three times it played Germany in Davis Cup but Germany owns a 9-6 series record going into this weekend's best-of-five series. The matches in Frankfurt are to be played on an indoor hard court.

Spain will be without world No. 1 Rafael Nadal and fifth-ranked David Ferrer this week but still have a championship doubles team in Marrero and Verdasco, who are coming off a title at the ATP World Tour Finals.

Saturday will mark the first Davis Cup action for Marrero, who is No. 8 in the world doubles rankings. Verdasco is 33rd in the singles rankings and 11th in doubles.

They are to play Daniel Brands and Tommy Haas on Saturday. The series opens Friday with Roberto Bautista Agut taking on Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber. Feliciano Lopez and Florian Mayer are to play the series' second singles match.

Reverse singles Sunday open with Lopez playing Kohlschreiber with a Bautista Agut-Mayer match penciled in to finish the series.

Spain owns five Davis Cup titles, with all coming since 2000 and three over 2008-11. Spain was the 2012 runner-up. Germany has won the Davis Cup three times, most recently in 1993 when Michael Stich won three matches in the final against Australia.
