Sharapova fired off 10 aces and saved all seven break points she faced in a 6-0, 6-1 win over Daniela Hantuchova. Sharapova won 62 percent of the points on serve and 65 percent when Hantuchova served.
Sharapova improved to 9-1 lifetime versus Hantuchova, who defeated Sharapova in 2004 in their first career meeting but has dropped the last nine meetings.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova used a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 upset of seventh-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro and gained a spot in the quarterfinals. Pavlyuchenkova had six breaks on the day, with three coming in the first set and two in the third.
Elina Svitolina ousted sixth-seeded Roberta Vinci 6-3, 0-6, 7-5 in a first-round match. Vinci actually won more points than Svitolina on the day but that was because of the second set in which she won 26-of-36 points. While she didn't face a break point in that set, she had her serve broken twice in each the first and third sets.
Vinci had lost her last five singles matches in WTA events.
Other first-round results saw eighth-seeded Kirsten Flipkens get by Mona Barthel 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 and qualifier Galina Voskoboeva defeated Stefanie Voegele 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3).
