WATERTOWN, Mass., Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Boston Red Sox TV analyst Jerry Remy will return after taking a leave of absence last season when his son was accused of murder, broadcaster NESN said Monday.

Remy, 61, left the broadcast booth in August when his son Jared was arrested and charged with slaying girlfriend Jennifer Martel.

NESN President and Chief Executive Sean McGrail announced Remy would return for his 27th season behind the microphone when spring training begins next month Ft. Myers, Fla.

"It was a difficult personal decision for Jerry to make and all of us at NESN and the Red Sox are completely supportive of his return to our broadcast," McGrail said in a statement.

Remy, who played second base for the Red Sox for seven years, spoke publicly for the first time since the slaying Monday, telling the Boston Globe that for some time he had considered ending his broadcasting career.

"I felt for a couple of months, for two or three months, that it was over," he said. "There's no way I was coming back."

But, he added, his wife, Phoebe, and friends urged him to reconsider.

Jared Remy remains jailed without bond and is scheduled for trial in October, the Globe reported.
