DETROIT, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Brad Boyes scored the equalizer on a short-handed goal late in regulation Sunday and Florida went on to post a comeback 5-4 victory over Detroit in a shootout.

The Panthers were trailing 4-2 when Drew Shore cut the deficit on a score with 5:32 remaining in the third period.

Then, with Florida short-handed, the Red Wings turned the puck over in the attacking zone and Panthers broke out on an odd-man rush. Boyes rattled a shot off the far post and past Jonas Gustavsson to knot the score with 3:46 left.

Defenseman Tom Gilbert kept Florida alive in the ensuing overtime when he made a skate save off a Detroit shot with Tim Thomas out of the net.

Nick Bjugstad got the only goal of the shootout and Thomas made it stand up with a pair of saves, giving Florida a win in the opener of a four-game road trip.

Sean Bergenheim and Jesse Winchester scored in regulation and Thomas ended 26 stops.

Thomas Tatar and Riley Sheahan each notched a goal with an assist while Gustav Nyquist and Daniel Alfredsson also scored for the Wings, who completed a 3-1-1 homestand.

Gustavsson finished with 33 saves.
