France's Pinturault takes men's super combined

KITZBUEHEL, Austria, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Alexis Pinturault of France parlayed a solid slalom Sunday night into victory in the men's World Cup super-combined.

Ted Ligety of the United States took second followed by Marcel Hirscher of Austria, who finished third.

The event combined the earlier super G race, won by Switzerland's Didier Defago, with a night slalom run in which Pinturault was clocked at 51.72 seconds. Pinturault finished 18th in the super G.

Ligety was timed at 51.91 in the slalom. Teammate Bode Miller had a shot at third place but was disqualified due to a gate error. Defago did not compete.

"It was big fight with Ted today," Pinturault said. "We were so close after the super G, but after us there were some very strong guys still up. I had no choice but wait and see if my run would be enough for a top placement."

One of the strong guys in the field was Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal, the men's overall points leader, who failed to finish the slalom. Hirscher remained in second on the leaderboard followed by Pinturault and Ligety.
