Austrians take two podium spots in women's super-G

CORTINA D'AMPEZZO, Italy, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- Austrian veteran Elisabeth Goergl edged Maria Hoefl-Riesch by 4/100ths of a second Thursday to win the women's World Cup super-G at Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy.

Goergl's teammate, Nicole Hosp, rounded out the podium with a third place in the run-up to next month's Winter Olympics in Russia.

Goergl covered the course in 1 minute, 24.23 seconds, to claim her sixth career World Cup victory and first top-three finish in the super-G this season.

"I feel very comfortable on my equipment," she said. "I am very happy I can ski the way I want to and that I am healthy."

Germany's Hoefl-Riesch increased her lead in the overall women's World Cup standings with her second-place finish.

"My consistency has been missing a little bit," she said. "With the Olympics getting closer, I hope I will have enough of this consistency and mental strength entering the races there."

Lara Gut of Switzerland held her narrow lead in the season super-G standings despite a disappointing 19th place. Julia Mancuso was the top American finisher with a seventh-place time of 1:25.21.
