BEIJING, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend the Winter Olympics' opening ceremony Feb. 7 in Sochi, Russia, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said Monday.
"This will be the first time a Chinese president has attended a major international sports event hosted in another country," spokesman Qin Gang said, noting Xi will attend at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Xi will be in Russia Feb. 6-8, the Chinese news agency Xinhua reported Monday.
