KA'UPULEHU, Hawaii, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Fred Couples fired a 7-under 65 Saturday to catch Bernhard Langer, already in the clubhouse with a 64, to share the Mitsubishi Electric Championship lead.

Langer was the first to reach 14-under for the two rounds, but Couples joined him there, rolling home a 12-footer for a birdie at No. 17 to secure a share of the top spot with the German in the season-opening event.

Each finished 36 holes at 14-under-par 130 at Hualalai Golf Club.

Mark O'Meara (65) grabbed sole possession of third place at 13-under.

David Frost (64), Jeff Sluman (66) and Steve Elkington (67) shared fourth at minus-12.

Overnight leader Rocco Mediate, battling an injured left hip, fell to a 70, ending the day in seventh-place tie with Tom Lehman (66) one shot further back.
