Kirk, seeking his third PGA Tour victory, finished 54 holes at 12-under 198, one better than Will Wilcox (6-under 64) and Harris English (67) at Waialae Country Club.
Knotted for fourth place at 10-under 200 were 2002 champion Jerry Kelly (66) and Jimmy Walker (67).
Zach Johnson, coming off a victory last week at Kapalua, carded a 66, as did Retief Goosen. They ended the third round knotted for sixth place at minus-9.
