Video shows Schumacher did not attempt to slow before accident

ALBERTVILLE, France, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Michael Schumacher was outside a marked ski run and did nothing to slow his speed before being injured when he hit a rock, French investigators said Wednesday.

Prosecutors said they made the determination during a review of a video recorded by a camera on the helmet of the former world chamption Formula driver, Euronew reported.

"He was going at a speed that was in accordance with the slope. But he did not make any special turns to reduce his speed," police investigator Stephane Bozon said.

Bozon said it was not possible to estimate Schumacher's speed, but described it as "the speed of a very good skier on a slope which was not very steep," CNN reported.

Prosecutor Patrick Quinn said the ski run appeared to have been marked according to French standards. He added that speed "is not a particularly important element" in his investigation.

Schumacher is in stable-but-critical condition after his Dec. 27 accident at a resort in Meribel. He has underdone two surgeries and has been in a medically induced coma for 10 days.

Schumacher was catapulted into a rock 30 feet from the edge of the run after hitting a rock hidden in the snow, Quincy said.

The prosecutor discounted the possibility Schumacher had trouble with his skis, saying they were almost new.

He said the investigation could take several weeks to complete.
