Brother of Ravens quarterback to enter NFL draft after year in college

WEST HAVEN, Conn., Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco's younger brother, who quit professional baseball last year, has reportedly signaled he wants to join his sibling in the NFL.

Former Baltimore Oriole Mike Flacco, a 26-year-old sophomore at the University of New Haven, has decided to declare for the NFL draft after being selected a third-team Division II All-American in his first season at the school, the Baltimore Sun reported Tuesday.

Before joining the New Haven team, Flacco last played football in high school.

"He's very raw, but has great athletic ability," New Haven coach Pete Rossomando said of Flacco after observing him in workouts last summer. "With his ability, he can be knocking on the door rather quickly."

Flacco was a 31st-round draft pick for the Orioles in 2009. He retired from the Boston Red Sox in 2013 after the Orioles traded him. He played the minor leagues until 2012, batting .214 with eight home runs, 15 doubles, one triple, seven stolen bases, 31 walks and 62 strikeouts.
