Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers hit with 3-game suspension

NEW YORK, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Buffalo Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers was slapped with a three-game suspension Monday for delivering a head shot to New Jersey's Dainius Zubrus.

NHL Chief Disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan said Myers was guilty of "unnecessarily" making contact with Zubrus' head while delivering a check during the third period of the Sabres' 2-1 win over the Devils Saturday.

The 23-year-old blueliner caught Zubrus up high just as the New Jersey forward had entered the Buffalo zone. He was whistled for a minor penalty on the play.

"Myers unnecessarily extends upward and launches himself into Zubrus' head, making it the main point of contact," Shanahan said.

Myers was also suspended for three games in 2011-12 for boarding Montreal forward Scott Gomez.
