ANN ARBOR, Mich., Jan. 1 (UPI) -- Tyler Bozak's quick shot inside the left post in a shootout Wednesday gave the Toronto Maple Leafs a 3-2 win over Detroit in the NHL's Winter Classic.

The game was played outdoors at Michigan Stadium on the University of Michigan campus before a crowd of more than 100,000 in snowy conditions and temperatures in the teens.

Each team scored once each in the second and third periods. Justin Abdelkader's tip-in past Toronto goaltender Jimmy Howard with 5:32 to play in regulation tied the score at 2-2.

Both teams missed their first shootout attempts and both made their second. Pavel Datsyuk went high for a Detroit score and Toronto's Joffrey Lupul kept the Maple Leafs alive with a wrist shot.

After Tomas Tater was stopped on his try, Bozak sent the puck just inside the left post for the game-winner.

Daniel Alfredsson deflected in a shot at the 13:14 point of the second period only to have James van Riemsdyk tie the score for Toronto with 37 seconds left in the period.

Bozak put the Maple Leafs up 2-1 into with a tip-in before Abdelkader got the Red Wings even.

Detroit fired off 43 shots but Toronto goaltender Jonathan Bernier was able to stop 41 of them, including 14 in the third period.

Howard would up with 24 saves on 26 shots.
