Roger-Vasselin, seeded seventh, was the only seeded player on Tuesday's schedule to have a relatively easy time as No. 6-seed Marcel Granollers was pushed to three sets and eighth-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut fell in three sets.
Roger-Vasselin needed only 70 minutes to dispatch Albert Ramos 6-1, 6-3. He piled up five breaks and won 60 percent of the points in the match. About the only negative in his game was the one break he allowed in the second set.
Alexander Kudryavtsev eliminated Batista Agut in a tight 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Kudryavtsev took the match by losing only five points on serve in the final set.
Granollers broke open his match with a dominant showing in the third set of a 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 win. He won 70 percent of the points -- losing four over his three serving games -- in the final set
Other first-round results Tuesday included Aljaz Bedene getting past Henri Laaksonen 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (7-0); Yuki Bhambri topping Pablo Carreno Busta 6-4, 6-3; and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez ousting Oleksandr Nedovyesov 7-5, 6-0. Also, Benjamin Becker advanced when, after Becker was up 6-4, 2-1, Julian Reister retired.
