NHL: New York Islanders 5, Boston 3

BOSTON, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- John Tavares capped a New York comeback with two third-period goals Tuesday, helping rally the Islanders over Boston 5-3.

New York was trailing 3-1 late in the second period when Frans Nielsen scored the second of his two goals and Kyle Okposo tied the game on a power-play score 3 1/2 minutes later.

Tavares got the go-ahead goal just 32 seconds into the final period and later added an insurance tally for the Islanders, who registered a second straight win.

Okposo, Thomas Vanek and Andrew McDonald each provided two assists.

Evgeni Nabokov earned the win with 35 saves.

Zdeno Chara, David Krejci and Patrice Bergeron each scored for the Bruins, who lost a second straight in regulation.

Tuukka Rask turned aside 26-of-31 shots.
