Schumacher remained in a medically induced coma and was listed in critical condition at a hospital in Grenoble, France, after he sustained head injuries after slamming into a rock while skiing in the French Alps Sunday, Radio France Internationale reported Tuesday.
"We are surprised by the improvement," one of Schumacher's doctors said during a news briefing.
After doctors first operated on Schumacher, they put him in a coma to help alleviate pressure.
Police investigating the circumstances of his fall said the German auto racer was wearing a helmet and no one else was involved when he fell.
The 44-year-old German, who retired from the circuit for a second time in 2012, won the Formula One championship seven times in his storied racing career.
