Friedsam takes upset win at Shenzhen Open

SHENZHEN, China, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Qualifier Anna-Lena Friedsam defeated No. 4-seeded Bojana Jovanovski in Monday's first-round play of the Shenzhen Open tennis tournament in China.

Friedsam, a 19-year-old ranked 122nd in the world, topped Jovanovski 6-1, 7-5.

Friedsam dominated the first set, winning nearly two-thirds of the points and cashing in two of her three break chances. The second set was closer but Friedsam still had four breaks in Jovanovski's six games serving.

No. 2-seeded Sara Errani survived a 6-0, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3) challenge from Zheng Saisai. Errani had six breaks in the match, with three each in the first and third sets.

Third-seeded Klara Zakopalova had five breaks in a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Donna Vekic in her first-round match.

Seventh-seeded Zheng Jie saved 14-of-16 break points she faced in a 6-0, 6-3 decision over Shahar Peer and No. 8-seeded Annika Beck stopped Ajla Tomljanovic 6-3, 6-4 with six breaks in 10 games receiving serve.

Also, Patricia Mayr-Achleitner, despite dropping serve three times, beat Risa Ozaki 6-2, 6-1; qualifier Viktorija Golubic defeated Aleksandra Wozniak 4-6, 6-0, 6-2; Jana Cepelova beat Lyudmyla Kichenok 4-6, 6-3, 6-1; Barbora Zahlavova Strycova took a 7-5, 6-4 win over Olga Govortsova; and Vania King advanced over Petra Martic 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
