The NHL said Engelland was guilty of delivering an illegal check to Abdelkader's head during Saturday's 4-1 Penguins win over the Red Wings.
The 31-year-old blueliner was slapped with a match penalty by game officials for his high hit.
He missed Pittsburgh's Monday victory against Toronto while awaiting the ruling and will be eligible to return in the Penguins' Dec. 27 road game against Carolina.
Abdelkader practiced for the first time since the hit Wednesday but said there is no timetable for his return as the team monitors him for possible concussion symptoms, the Detroit Free Press reported.
