BELGRADE, Serbia, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- World No. 2-ranked Novak Djokovic has hired six-time Grand Slam champion Boris Becker as a coach.

Djokovic, who also has won six major tournaments including the last three Australian Opens, said that with the addition of Becker his "team is now strengthened and we hope for maximum results."

Becker joins a group that includes Marian Vajda, who has coached Djokovic for eight years.

"Boris brings new fresh approach and, together with Vajda, he will make a winning combination," Djokovic said on his website.

"I am really excited to have the opportunity to work with Boris. He is a true legend, someone who has great tennis knowledge and his experience will help me win new trophies from the Grand Slams and other tournaments.

"Becker is a great person, too, and I am sure he will fit in our team in the best possible way."

Djokovic is chasing Rafael Nadal for the No. 1 ranking in men's tennis. Nadal took the top spot from Djokovic in October. Djokovic had been No. 1 for the 48 weeks before that and for 101 weeks in his career.

Becker was ranked No. 1 twice in his career, most recently in July 1991. He won the Australian Open in 1991 and '96, took Wimbledon in 1985, '86 and '89 and won the U.S. Open in 1989.

Djokovic has won five Grand Slam titles from 2011-13 and finished second in four others.
