Brooks in front at golf's Nelson Mandela Championship

DURBAN, South Africa, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- Daniel Brooks posted a bogey-free 8-under-par 62 Wednesday in taking the lead at the European Tour's Nelson Mandela Championship in South Africa.

The tournament was moved up one day to accommodate funeral services for Mandela, the anti-apartheid leader and former South African president. Mandela died last Thursday at age 95 and his funeral was Tuesday.

Wednesday's start of the golf tournament was delayed seven hours, however, because of water-logged conditions at the course. Dozens of players were unable to tee off Wednesday by the time play was suspended due to darkness. The first round is to resume at 6 a.m. local time Thursday.

Brooks did get his entire first round in, though, getting four birdies on each side for his 62.

Francois Calmels had four second birdies in one stretch but also two bogeys, in a 7-under 63 for second place. Edouard Dubois and Romain Wattel each turned in 6-under 64s while Ryan Cairns and Joel Sjoholm both shot 65.

Five of Brooks's eight birdies came on par 3s. He had one five-hole span -- over Nos. 8-12 -- in which he made four birdies.
