Former MLB star elected mayor of Venezuelan hometown

He was elected as a socialist.

Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Former Major League Baseball player Magglio Ordonez has been elected the mayor of his hometown in Venezuela.

Ordonez ran on the socialist ticket of President Nicolas Maduro, who took over the country after the death of Hugo Chavez earlier this year. Ordonez's city, Sotillo in eastern Venezuela, has a population of 250,000 people.

Ordonez formerly played with the Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox. He retired in 2012 after 15 years of playing professional baseball.
