PITTSBURGH, Dec. 9 (UPI) -- Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik was put on the injured reserve list Monday after sustaining a concussion, the team announced.
Orpik was hurt during Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Boston Bruins.
Members of each team were gathered in a scrum in the first period when the Bruins' Shawn Thornton pulled Orpik down to the ice from behind and delivered a punch to his face while kneeling over him.
Orpik, 33, was knocked unconscious by the blow and later removed from the ice on a stretcher.
Earlier in the game he had delivered a shoulder to the head of Boston's Loui Eriksson, which resulted in a concussion to the Bruins forward.
Orpik has one goal and six assists in 30 games this season.
Defenseman Brian Dumoulin was recalled from Wilkes-Barre Scranton of the American Hockey League to take his roster spot.
