CALGARY, Alberta, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- Mikael Backlund put Calgary in front for good early in the second period Wednesday and the Flames went on to down Phoenix 4-1.

Backlund's goal came at the 5:48 mark of the second and Mark Giordano produced a power-play score later in the period. Lee Stempniak finished the scoring with a shorthanded goal in the third.

Karri Ramo, making his second straight start, earned the win by stopping 29 shots.
