VAIL, Colo., Nov. 27 (UPI) -- U.S. skiing star Lindsey Vonn told NBC's "Today" Wednesday she expected to be back on the slopes in time to compete in the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Vonn partially tore a ligament in her right knee last week when she fell during a training run on the downhill course at Copper Mountain, Colo.

Vonn, one of the top female downhillers in the world, said she would skip this weekend's World Cup event in Colorado in order to give her knee more time to heal in the run-up to the games in Sochi, Russia in February.

"Unfortunately, it was really bad timing for me, but I'm still confident," Vonn said in an interview from Vail, Colo. "I just have to kind of take it day by day right now, but I still have time before Sochi."

Vonn's knee was surgically repaired earlier this year. She told NBC her most-recent injury could have been worse had she not been wearing a protective brace.

"I've been doing rehab and I've been progressing every day, but in the next couple of days I'm going to start getting on snow here at Vail and see how it feels and hopefully get a couple of days of training before I head up to Canada," Vonn said. "If things go well, I'll be racing next week."
