Water skier killed in race accident in Australia

SYDNEY, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- Champion water skier Sarah Teelow died Monday of injuries received during a weekend race in Australia.

Teelow, 20, was severely injured Sunday morning when she crashed early on in the Bridge to Bridge race, a 75-mile event on the Hawkesbury River, The Sydney Morning Herald reported. Police said she suffered spinal and head injuries and was flown to a hospital where she died about 8 p.m. Monday, the newspaper said.

The Herald said the national body for ski racing, which confirmed Teelow's death, called her one of the "sport's most accomplished young competitors."

"The ski racing fraternity is deeply saddened by Sarah's passing and extends its condolences to her family," said Kristie Middleton, chief executive of Ski Racing Australia.

Teelow was a human movement student at the University of Technology Sydney.
