ALGIERS, Algeria, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- Fans' celebrations after Algeria earned a berth in the 2014 World Cup finals turned deadly with at least 13 people killed, Algerian newspapers reported.

El Raaed said Wednesday in addition to those killed, 240 people were injured. Another newspaper, El Massa, put the toll much higher nationwide -- 22 dead and 260 injured.

El Massa said the festivities got out of hand after the Algerian national team defeated Burkina Faso Tuesday night. The newspaper said the fatalities included six each in Biskra, Tipaza and Mila.

El Raaed reported the General Directorate for Civil Protection said the deaths included people hit by vehicles while celebrating and at least one person who died after suffering a heart attack.

The injured included many trapped in masses of celebrating fans.

The newspaper said it is the fourth time in its history the national team has reached the World Cup. The 2014 finals will be in Brazil.
