Kurt Caselli killed in Baja 1000 crash in Mexico

ENSENADA, Mexico, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Motorcycle racer Kurt Caselli died after apparently hitting an animal that caused him to crash during the 2013 Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 in Mexico, his team said.

SCORE International Off-Road Racing, the sanctioning body behind the off-road race, said Caselli's KTM Racing team was in first place Friday afternoon when "he apparently lost control of his KTM motorcycle in a sandy, high-speed section at approximate race-mile 792."

ESPN reported KTM said in a statement Saturday evening, that Caselli, 30, suffered "severe head trauma" and "died of his injuries in Ensenada."

KTM said the team inspected the wreckage of his motorcycle and "discovered traces on the machine that indicate he had collided with some small animal, which apparently caused the crash."
