NHL: Toronto 2, New Jersey 1 (SO)

TORONTO, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- James van Riemsdyk came through with the only goal of the shootout Friday, giving Toronto a 2-1 victory over New Jersey.

It was the fourth win in five games for the Maple Leafs, who with 11 victories and 22 points have moved into a tie with Tampa Bay for the early lead in the Atlantic Division.

The game was scoreless into the third period before Phil Kessel gave Toronto the lead 8:12 into the stanza. Michael Ryder tied it with 4:45 left in regulation. Both of the third-period goals came on the power play.

Jonathan Bernier made 34 saves for Toronto, which has played two overtime games this year and won them both. Cory Schneider stopped 27 shots in defeat.
