Speaking on a Chicago radio station, Cutler said, "I don't think we can say I'll be out there for the Detroit game," the Chicago Sun-Times reported Wednesday.
Cutler suffered a torn groin muscle Oct. 20 in a game against the Washington Redskins and was expected to miss four weeks.
The injury "feels good" after an aggressive treatment program, he told Marc Silverman and Tom Waddle, hosts of "The Jay Cutler Show."
Noting that he hadn't been at a team practice since the injury, Cutler said, "I haven't been in a live situation and done all the cuts and drops and saw how it felt yet.
"We feel good," he said about the play of backup quarterback Josh McCown, who has had three touchdown passes, no interceptions and no sacks since standing in for Cutler.
''We don't want to get into a situation where I come back a week too soon and I'm set back another four to six weeks," Cutler said. "[I'm] trying to be smart with it.''
