The newspaper said stalled lease negotiations between the Athletics and the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Commission on the Athletics' use of O.co Coliseum led to Major League Baseball officials raising the idea of sharing the San Francisco ballpark with the Giants.
The Athletics' lease at O.co Coliseum expired at the end of the 2013 season.
It is unlikely the team will play its games in San Francisco unless the commission rejects the Athletics' offer to extend the lease for five years or less, the newspaper said. It added Major League Baseball is still wrestling with the team's interest in moving to San Jose, about 40 miles away, as well as a lack of feasible plans for a new stadium to be built in Oakland.
