Outstrip wins Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf

ARCADIA, Calif., Nov. 1 (UPI) -- Outstrip came roaring down the stretch to snatch victory in Friday's $1 million Grade I Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Santa Anita.

Giovanni Boldini, who looked like a winner at the 1/16 pole, settled for second, 3/4 length back. Bobby's Kitten, the favorite and the pacesetter, held on well to finish third.

Outstrip, a British-bred colt by Exceed and Excel, represents the Dubai-based Godolphin Racing. The rangy gray had two wins, a second and third from four starts in England before heading for the Breeders' Cup.

With jockey Mike Smith winning his second Breeders' Cup race of the day, Outstrip finished 1 mile on firm turf in 1:33.20. The winner is trained by Charlie Appleby, the newest head trainer in Sheik Mohammed's Godolphin multinational operation.

The colt becomes a likely candidate for the 2,000 Guineas in England next year, as does Giovanni Boldini, a War Front colt who represents Godolphin's chief rival, Ireland-based Coolmore.
