MEMPHIS, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- Marc Gasol
saved the game in regulation Friday and Memphis pulled away late in the overtime period to outlast Detroit 111-108.
Gasol scored five of his 15 points in the last 42 seconds of the fourth period and his tip-in with 8 seconds left created a 95-95 tie. Memphis then survived a missed 3-point attempt at the regulation buzzer by Chauncey Billups.
The Grizzlies built an eight-point lead in the final minute of overtime and protected the lead at the foul line thanks to conversions by Jerryd Bayless and Tayshaun Prince.
Will Bynum hit a 3-pointer for Detroit as time expired with the game having already been decided.
Mike Conley led Memphis with 22 points, while Zach Randolph had 16 points and 10 rebounds. The Grizzlies have won eight straight meetings with the Pistons.
The victory was the first for David Joerger as head coach of the Grizzlies, who dropped their opener to San Antonio.
Detroit was led by 19 points from both Josh Smith and Rodney Stuckey.
