Chriselliam wins Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf

ARCADIA, Calif., Nov. 1 (UPI) -- Chriselliam kicked clear in the stretch to win Friday's $1 million Grade I Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf by daylight.

Testa Rossi, a French-bred filly, came from the rear of the field to finish second, 2 1/2 lengths farther back, and Colonel Joan did the best of the U.S. contenders, getting home third, another 1/2 length in arrears.

Chriselliam, an Irish-bred daughter of Iffraaj, ran 1 mile on firm turf in 1:33.72 with Richard Hughes in for the ride. She sat in mid-pack through much of the race, got room outside the leaders turning for home and found another gear for the final furlong.

Hughes also rode the filly when she won the Group 1 Shadwell Fillies Mile at Newmarket in England last month. She now has three wins from six starts.

The race had shaped up as a battle between two Middle Eastern powerhouse owners, the Godolphin Racing combine of Sheik Mohammed bin Rasheed al Maktoum of Dubai and Sheik Joaan bin Hamad al Thani of Qatar. Each had two fillies in the race, none of which was involved in the finish.
