Tsonga beaten in Paris, will miss out on London

PARIS, Oct. 29 (UPI) -- Jo-Wilfried Tsonga saw his hopes of qualifying for the ATP Tour Finals end Tuesday with an upset loss at the Paris Masters.

Tsonga entered the day fourth in the race for the final three invitations for the Tour Finals but dropped a 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (9-7) second-round decision to Kei Nishikori that eliminated him gaining a spot in the London Finals.

Tsonga lost his serve just once in the 2 1/2-hour match but that allowed Nishikori to get to the second-set tiebreaker. Tsonga fought off four break points -- he only saw six on the day -- in the third set but fell again in the tiebreaker.

Also in the second round, second-seeded Novak Djokovic extended his winning streak to 13 matches with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 win over No. 189-ranked Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

Herbert had a pair of set points but Djokovic fought those off and put together a string of points in the tiebreaker that seemed to break Herbert and led to a 5-0 Djokovic advantage in the second set.

It was Djokovic's first match since winning back-to-back tournaments in Beijing and Shanghai.

Ninth-seeded Richard Gasquet, just ahead of Tsonga in the Tour Finals standings, got by Fernando Verdasco 7-5, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3 and No. 14-seeded Jerzy Janowicz, last year's Paris Masters runner-up, beat Santiago Giraldo 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.

The first round was completed Tuesday with Marcel Granollers among the winners. He pulled off a 6-4, 6-4 win over Dmitry Tursunov, gaining the right to meet world No. 1-ranked Rafael Nadal in the second round Wednesday.

Grigor Dimitrov got past Michael Llodra 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-3, losing his serve once in the process, and Kevin Anderson had just taken a 4-6, 7-6 (7-0), 2-1 lead when Mikhail Youzhny was unable to continue and retired.

Also Nicolas Mahut topped Alexandr Dolgopolov 7-6 (8-6), 6-1; Pablo Andujar, subbing for an injured Gael Monfils, got by Vasek Pospisil 6-4, 2-6, 6-4; Ivan Dodig stopped Edouard Roger-Vasselin 7-6 (8-6), 6-4; and Michal Przysiezny beat Jarkko Nieminen 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).
