SAN ANTONIO, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Kenny Perry moved a step closer to winning the Champions Tour's season-long points race Friday by taking the first round lead at the AT&T Championship.

Perry, a two-time major championship winner this year and three times a runner-up, shot a 7-under 65 at TPC-San Antonio to take a one-shot lead over Tom Pernice Jr.

Anders Forsbrand and Bernhard Langer shared third place at 67 while Colin Montgomerie posted a 68 to tie for fifth along with Russ Cochran and Bob Tway.

Perry and Langer are running 1-2 in the race for the Charles Schwab Cup, which will be awarded next week. This is the final full-field event on the Champions Tour schedule with the Charles Schwab Cup Championship in San Francisco finishing off the 2013 season.

Perry birdied five of the first six holes in his opening round and also put together a stretch of three birdies in four holes beginning at the par-5 12th.
