SANDY, Utah, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- Goals by Alvario Sabario and Joao Plata early in the second half Wednesday gave Real Salt Lake a 2-1 win over Chivas USA.

Salt Lake played its final regular-season game and moved into first place in the Western Conference -- two points in front of Portland. The Timbers can overtake Salt Lake and capture the conference title, however, with a victory over Chivas on Saturday.

Sabario converted a penalty kick in the 49th minute after Mario de Luna was called for a hand ball in penalty area. Plata drove a shot from outside the box into the left corner of the goal in the 52nd minute.

The Chivas goal came from Julio Morales in the 77th minute. Chivas has only one point in its last five games and will finish in last place in the Western Conference.
