The 24-year-old hurler, who started the 2013 All-Star Game for the National League, went on the disabled list Aug. 26 and was diagnosed with a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.
After an unsuccessful effort at rehabbing the elbow without surgery, a decision was made to go under the knife. As a result, Harvey will miss the entire 2014 season and is expected to return at the start of 2015.
He compiled a 9-5 record with a 2.27 earned run average and 191 strikeouts over 26 games in 2013.
