Mardona's bank accounts frozen over tax dispute

MILAN, Italy, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- The Italian government said it has frozen bank accounts for Argentinian soccer legend Diego Mardona until he repays a $53.3 million tax debt.

Mardona, best remembered for scoring Argentina's infamous "Hand of God" goal in the 1986 World Cup quarterfinals against England, signed papers served to him at a Milan hotel without incident, Sky News reported Saturday.

Mardona has said the debt is the responsibility of the Italian soccer club Napoli, where he played from 1984-91.

Italian officials have taken to unusual methods to recoup the tax debt, including confiscating Rolex watches and other jewelery Mardona has worn in public.
