CONOVER, N.C., Oct. 18 (UPI) -- Bernhard Langer, trying to overtake Kenny Perry for the lead in the yearlong Champions Tour points race, shared the lead Friday at the Greater Hickory Classic.

Langer shot a 6-under 64 in the opening round at the Rock Barn Golf & Spa, as did Dick Mast and Anders Forsbrand.

Former U.S. Senior Open champion Olin Browne and John Riegger shared fourth place with a 65 while Brad Bryant and Mike Goodes both shot 66.

Langer, twice a winner on the Champions Tour this year, is in second place in the Charles Schwab Cup points standings -- 609 points behind Perry.

Perry shot a 68 in the first round, leaving him in a tie for 21st place. Perry and Langer have been 1-2 in the standings for the past eight tournaments.
