NHL: New York Rangers 2, Washington 0

WASHINGTON, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Henrik Lundqvist made 22 saves and recorded a shutout Wednesday and the New York Rangers put together a brief surge of offense to down Washington 2-0.

The Rangers came into the game with the fewest goals in the NHL -- nine in five contests. John Moore and Ryan Callahan scored less than 2 minutes apart in the second period to give Lundqvist some breathing room and New York went on to snap a three-game losing streak.

It was the third goal of the season for Callahan.

Lundqvist, beginning his ninth season in the league, turned in the 46th shutout of his career.

Braden Holtby gave up the two New York goals on 36 shots. The Capitals have dropped five of their first seven games this season.

Alex Ovechkin took eight of Washington's 22 shots without expanding on his goal total of six -- one off the league lead.
