Edwards, 26, was at the Willowbank Raceway in Queensland, Australia, coaching drivers when the car slammed into a tire wall protecting a concrete barrier and burst into flames, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported.
The 20-year-old driver of the car was trapped in the vehicle for two hours before he could be extricated and airlifted to a hospital, said Police Inspector David Preston.
"He has some fairly severe injuries upon the vehicle making contact with the wall here," Preston said. "It has exploded into flames, so there's extensive injuries -- physically -- and [he was] also burned."
Edwards recently played his father, British race car driver Guy Edwards, in Ron Howard's film, "Rush," in which the character of the elder Edwards pulls badly burned Austrian Formula One driver Niki Lauda from a fiery wreck in Germany.
