Some questioned whether Peterson should play in Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers following the Friday death of his son in Sioux Falls, S.D., after an alleged assault by the boyfriend of the child's mother.
But 2012 league Most Valuable Player, referencing a similar tragedy when his half-brother was slain on the night before his appearance at the NFL combine in 2007, said in a text message sent to Fox Sports his decision to play was for the best.
"My brother passed the night before the combine and I decided to go through with it," he wrote. "The same reason why I will play this week. You may ask why? God wants good to come from it. ... We mourn and grieve but heaven had the baddest welcoming party for my son. That knowledge gives me peace. I'm still hurt and feel the pain of life, but I'm able to function because of the peace and joy of knowing my loved ones are in a much better place."
Sioux Falls Police said Joseph Robert Patterson, 27, was charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery on an infant, and was being held on $750,000 bond Friday.
