Kevin Siegrist, Randy Choate and Carlos Martinez combined for 1 1/3 shutout relief innings and Trevor Rosenthal struck out the side in the ninth for his first save of the series as the Cardinals shut down the injury-depleted Dodgers line-up.

St. Louis got its only run in the fifth inning when David Freese led off with a double against Clayton Kershaw, went to third on a passed ball and one out later scored on a Jon Jay sacrifice fly.

Kershaw (0-1) allowed just the one unearned run over two hits over six innings, yielding one walk and striking out five.

Star rookie outfielder Yasiel Puig struck out four times for the Dodgers, who were playing without outfielder Andre Ethier (sore ankle) and shortstop Hanley Ramirez (bruised ribs).
