Former Bears QB Avellini faces drunken-driving charge

CHICAGO, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- A grand jury has indicted former Chicago Bears quarterback Bob Avellini in his latest drunken driving arrest.

Avellini, 60, was arrested last month after being pulled over in Roselle, Ill., and faces five felony charges in an indictment handed up Friday by a DuPage County grand jury.

The arrest -- Avellini's sixth such brush with the law since 2002 -- could land him in prison for 10 years, prosecutors told the Chicago Tribune. He had two prior convictions for drunken driving and was allegedly weaving his way around Roselle while driving with a suspended license.

Court records said Avellini scored a 0.181 blood-alcohol level when his blood was tested 4 hours after he was stopped. Officers said he had alcohol on his breath and "glassy bloodshot eyes."

Avellini played for the Bears from 1975-1984. He filed for bankruptcy last year, the Tribune said.
