Buccaneers report third MRSA case in locker room

TAMPA, Fla., Oct. 12 (UPI) -- A third member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has been infected with the dangerous and very stubborn MRSA bacteria, the NFL team said Friday.

The Bucs did not identify the stricken player, but NFL.com said it was rookie cornerback Johnthan Banks.

Banks joined kicker Lawrence Tynes and guard Carl Nicks, who were previously diagnosed with MRSA, an antibiotic-resistant staph infection known formally as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

The Bucs said in a written statement the team was working with Duke Infection Outreach Network on improving sanitation in the team locker room and educating players on avoiding infection.

The co-director of DICON, Dr. Deverick Anderson, told reporters the three cases did not appear to be related, CBS Sports said.
